43% Of US Households Own Mutual Funds, While Only 4% Hold ETFs

About 43% of U.S. households owned mutual funds in mid-2014, compared to roughly 4% holding ETFs, notes Credit Suisse.

Dana Saporta and Axel Lang of Credit Suisse’s Economics Research team in their August 27, 2015 research report “US Economics Digest” point out that mutual fund flows moderated in 2014 and during the first half of this year.

Outflows in both equity and bond funds

Saporta and Lang published their report based on the Investment Company Institute’s research tracking mutual fund cash flows from the financial crisis through June 2015. The analysts point out that retail investment outflows gained strength in Q3 2015. As can be seen in the following graph, data to date suggest that we will witness the first example...
