Black Friday is over.  Early indications are that online sales will far surpass all-time records.  By contrast, early results on department stores are mixed.

Before addressing the department stores versus online retailers issue, here's a broad view of the American consumer.

It's fairly easy to see that the most recent tick at 1.7% Y/Y is weak.  Incredibly weak.
