Which President Has been the Worst for Homeownership? Hint: You'll Probably Get Second Worst Wrong

Earlier this week, the U.S. Census Bureau released their quarterly accounting of the homeownership rate in the United States.

The numbers in the following graphic for 1965 to 2015.

If you're a watcher of the U.S. housing market, it came as no surprise that the homeownership rate declined again, reaching a 25-year low of 63.7%.

Overall, as indicated, since 1965 there's been two major business cycles associated with homeownership.

The First "Boom" and "Bust" Homeownership Cycle

The first "up" cycle went from January 1965 to September 1980.

The housing market hit a wall after the hot, high-inflation years of the late 1970s.

From September 1980 to December 1985, the homeownership rate declined from about 65.8% to 63.5%, a marked drop for the time.
