We all have been watching chaotic scenes in Hungary, Germany, Croatia and other European countries as refugees (and opportunities) flock from Syria, Afghanistan and other Asian and Middle Eastern countries. So why does Merkel want to accept so many refugees and migrants? If you are charitable you can say she feels bad, or more likely, she realizes the dire demographic situation Germany is in.

If the EU governments handle the migrant crisis effectively, the influx of people could lift potential growth and support an aging population, notes HSBC.
