The following letter appeared in the April 3, 1961, issue of Barron’s. The writer, Gilbert A. Wilkins, wrote to Barron's following the announcement that the New York Stock Exchange was planning to introduce a new ticker, with nearly twice the speed of the old device.
This advance was needed as the average daily volume on the exchange had surged to 4 million shares.

The writer begins:
“I read that the New York Stock Exchange is going to get a new stock ticker. But I look in vain for a sign of the dynamic progress which Americans expect. Let’s modernize the old ticker, not just speed...
