U.S. employment picture is bright along with select European countries while Canada and Australian economies remain soft
As opposed to Japan, where a previous Bridgewater strategy piece noted had been lagging in wage growth, in the U.S. an acceleration in employment has correlated with a pickup in wages.
Considering the employment picture in detail, the report noted that a rising unemployment rate in January "didn’t mean much" as the uptick was driven by people joining the labor force rather than fewer people being employed. Rather than the uptick in unemployment being a negative, Bridgewater report authors Jason Rotenberg and Spencer Gaffney think more people being induced to enter the work force is really a sign of a healthy economy.
