The hedge fund industry has attracted plenty of criticism in recent years for its poor performance and high fees. However, while hedge funds lost money on aggregate in 2018, it did mark a rare year of outperformance for managers compared to US stocks.

According to Hedge Fund Research's Fund Weighted Composite Index, the average fund fell 4.07% last year, narrowly outperforming the S&P 500's loss of 4.39% including dividends. On an asset-weighted basis, the average fund declined -0.84% according to HFR's numbers.
