Warren Buffett-Linked Foundations Have Over $5B In AUM & $500M In Amazon: These Are All Their Stocks And Bonds

Warren Buffett is one of the world’s most philanthropic individuals, having co-founded and signed The Giving Pledge, promising to donate more than 99% of his wealth to charitable causes either during his life or after death. His children are also very philanthropic, donating lots of money to worthy causes through their own foundations. Additionally, two of his children sit on the board of the foundation named for Warren Buffett’s first wife.

Four foundations linked to Warren Buffett and his family are: The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, the Sherwood Foundation, the NoVo Foundation, and the Howard G. Buffett Foundation. Also worth mentioning is the Buffett Early Childhood Fund, which didn’t have any investments in 2024.

The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation

Susan Thompson Buffett was Warren Buffett’s first wife. Susan A. Buffett, Warren Buffett’s eldest daughter, chairs the board of directors, and his son Peter is a director.

The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation provides college scholarships for Nebraska students, serving the state for over 50 years. Grants paid out in fiscal 2024 went to Accelerate Change, the ACLU, the Acog Foundation, the Cobalt Foundation, Advocates for Youth, the African Union Development Agency New Partnership for Africa’s Development, All Above All, Alliance for Youth Organizing, Florida Alliance for Civic Engagement, and the American Independent Foundation, among others.

According to the foundation’s 2024 990-PF, which was filed in November 2025, it had $2.8 billion in assets at the end of the fiscal year. Warren Buffett donated $1.1 billion worth of Berkshire Hathaway stock during the year.

For capital gains and losses, The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation reported $561.5 million in gains on the sale of donated shares of Berkshire Hathaway. Those 1.4 million shares were donated in June 2023 and then sold in December 2024. The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation also reported $179,000 in gains on the sale of publicly traded securities purchased in January 2023 and then sold in December 2024. The foundation was flat on the sale of publicly traded securities purchased in May 2024 and sold in December 2024.
