Speaking at Invest For Kids 2025 conference, John Harris, Managing Partner at Ruane Cunniff detailed a very personal perspective on the realities of high-conviction, long-term equity investing. Harris, who is also a portfolio manager and member of the Sequoia Strategy Investment Committee, centered his discussion, titled "The Discipline of Long-Term Investing," not just on a specific stock pick but on the accompanying "emotional journey of being a business owner in the public stock market". His core thesis was that fundamental analysis, no matter how sound, is insufficient without the required institutional patience and client trust needed to endure agonizing, long periods where the investment "does not work".
