Active mutual fund managers had a good May, in many cases beating their respective stock averages, a Bank of America Merrill Lynch report observed roughly three weeks after it announced a more active presence in reporting on mutual funds.

Fully 50% of large cap fund managers beat their Russell 1000 index benchmark in May, a BAML Equity and Quant Strategy report observed. The average large cap fund advanced +1.8% over the period, which was in-line with the Russell 1000.
