JP Morgan: Hedge Fund Industry Growth Slower Than Private Equity and Debt

Since 2008, the sheer number of hedge funds and their AUM has been on the rise. In 2008 there were 6,845 registered hedge funds with over $1.4 trillion in AUM. Last year ended with 8,238 active hedge funds that have a combined AUM of $4.5 trillion.

The vast majority of hedge funds are registered in the United States (66%). In second place was the combined regions of Europe, the Middle East & Africa (20%), while 12% of the funds are based in Asia.
