Carlson Capital Lags Market Returns YTD; Varian Medical Is Largest Holding

This year, reports suggested that Carlson Capital's stock-picking fund, Black Diamond Thematic, lost more than 20% in January. This followed the fund's terrible performance in 2019.

Even though the fund, which was one of the firm's most extensive strategies, added 18% for the year, it lost roughly 60% of assets when one of the firm's two portfolio managers, Matthew Barkoff, resigned.

According to performance data ValueWalk has been able to review, Carlson Capital's other funds have registered a positive performance this year.

A recent investor tear sheet noted that the firm's Double Black Diamond, L.P.and Black Diamond Partners, L.P strategies added 1.36% and lost -1.15% respectively for the year to the end of October. Combined, these two strategies make up 43% of group...
