Many well-known hedge fund managers have launched their own foundations to dole out their millions, and Mala Gaonkar is among them. Gaonkar founded SurgoCap Partners to great acclaim in 2022, launching in 2023 with the largest ever debut for a woman-led hedge fund. She was previously a founding partner at Lone Pine Capital in 1998.

Surgo Foundation US is a “privately funded action tank obsessed with asking ‘Why?’” The foundation aims to “bring precision to solutions that save and improve lives by integrating behavioral science and artificial intelligence.”

Gaonkar serves as a trustee for the foundation. She also co-founded Surgo Ventures, another 501(c)3 non-profit organization, with Sema Sgaier, serving as chairman...
