The then 28-year-old manager founded his firm just before the 2008 financial crisis. After focusing on value investing at Neuberger Berman, he wanted to find undervalued stocks and bonds at his firm.

The timing could not have been better for a value investor. While many managers struggled during the financial crisis, the crisis was the perfect environment for distressed value investors like Gertzulin and the early investors of DG.
