Seeking Opportunities in Emerging Markets: Equinox Partners Pitches Two Obscure Regions at Grant’s Conference

When investors talk about emerging markets, China often gets most of the attention. However, one manager looks beyond China to obscure regions and countries where active managers have the markets all to themselves.

An opportunity in Ghana

At Grant's Annual Fall Conference earlier this month, Sean Fieler of Equinox Partners Investment Management explained why he's bullish on obscurity. The emerging-markets manager sees opportunities in regions where few Americans vacation and in assets few Americans have invested in over the past decade.

One position Fieler highlighted was Scancom, Ghana's dominant cellphone company with an 80% share in voice and mobile money. The company has a $1.8 billion-equivalent market capitalization and accounts for most of the volume on the Ghanaian stock exchange.
