2025 Sohn Monaco Conference - Carrhae Capital's Ali Akay
Carrhae Capital: Rooted in History, Focused on Emerging Markets
Justin Hildick, co-chair of Sohn Monaco, introduced Ali Akay, highlighting his extensive background in the hedge fund community, including tenures at Goldman Sachs, HBK, and SAC, before he founded Carrhae Capital. A unique aspect of Carrhae Capital, as Akay explained, is its name, which draws inspiration from the famous Battle of Carrhae in 53 BC. This historical event saw the Parthians defeat the Romans, serving as a "poignant example of the arrogance and failure to take local advice by the Romans". Akay noted that Carrhae Capital has embraced this lesson, building its strategy on "Parthian combat expertise and emergent market local knowledge".
The firm has $4 billion in AUM with staff located key emerging market locations such as London, Dubai, Brazil, China, India, and the UAE. Akay emphasized that Carrhae Capital operates "for emerging markets and by emerging markets," ensuring that only individuals from emerging markets are part of their research team.
