2025 Morningstar Investment Conference: Rick Rieder on What Matters Now

During this panel, Rick Rieder, Managing Director and CIO of Global Fixed Income at BlackRock, explored the rapid pace of global change and its implications for investing, highlighting a shift in how we perceive money and value. He discussed the transformative impact of technology, from generalized artificial intelligence and robotics enhancing personal and labor productivity to the potential for lower inflation and a shorter work week by 2050. Despite near-term inflation from tariffs, the US economy is seen as resilient, driven by its service sector. Rieder noted the growing government debt burden as a key long-term risk.

2025 Morningstar Investment Conference: Today’s Thoughts on Tomorrow’s AI Industry

This panel, featuring Brian Colello, Technology Equity Senior Analyst, Eric Compton, Director of Equity Research, Technology, and Dave Sekera, Chief US Market Strategist, all from Morningstar Research Services LLC, looked at the impact of artificial intelligence on markets and valuations. The explosive adoption and revenue generation of generative artificial intelligence was a theme of the discussion. A "once-in-a-generation boom" in technology spending, particularly for specialized processors, indicates strong demand.

While the artificial intelligence industry is currently seen as a rational investment phase, driven by free cash flow, the cyclical nature of the semiconductor industry means there will be hype and danger, as well. Identifying successful ventures requires looking for those with differentiated hardware, broad scale and distribution, and effective early utilization of artificial intelligence, often through unique data advantages.

This session, led by Michael Falcon, CEO of Eagle Capital Management, highlighted an active large-cap equity manager's consistent long-term outperformance against major indices. Falcon emphasized a valuation-oriented, highly concentrated approach with a 5-10 year investment horizon.

He stressed that while passive investing has gained traction, alternatives, including private funds, are becoming more accessible.

2025 Morningstar Investment Conference: Pulling Back the Curtain on the Magnificent Seven

This panel, featuring Dan Davidowitz (Polen Capital Management), Aziz Hamzaogullari (Loomis, Sayles & Company), Chris Lin (Fidelity Management and Research Company), and Tony Thomas (Morningstar Research Services LLC), explored the dynamics of dominant technology companies. The managers highlighted their focus on individual business quality, long-term earnings growth, and risk/reward profiles rather than benchmark adherence.

Challenges in determining the return on investment for large-scale capital expenditures in artificial intelligence infrastructure were discussed, with an emphasis on seeking durable, consistent growth. Predictions were made regarding which of these dominant companies might lose their top positions, with potential replacements from other software or semiconductor industries.

2025 Morningstar Investment Conference - ETFs and CLOs: Risks and Opportunities

This session, with Paul Olmsted (Morningstar Research Services, LLC), Jessica Shill (Janus Henderson Investors), Bryan Whalen (TCW), and Edwin Wilches (PGIM Fixed Income), introduced Collateralized Loan Obligations (CLOs) as a significant component of the fixed income market, comprising mostly high-yield US corporate bank loans. Wilches explained that CLOs are unique in their ability to create various risk layers, from safest to equity tranches, catering to diverse investor preferences. Shill noted their floating-rate nature makes them attractive in periods of rising interest rates, and Whalen added they have benefited from the market's shift towards private credit.

The speakers believe active management is critical for CLOs due to their complex structures, covenants, and the need to manage the underlying loan portfolios.

Emerging Markets: Value Trap or Value Play?

This panel, featuring Rohit Chopra (Lazard Asset Management), John Dance (Fidelity Investments), Robby Greengold (Morningstar Research Services LLC), and Lisa Thompson (Capital Group), debated the investment case for emerging markets, which have historically underperformed US equities. Chopra and Dance presented arguments for investing, including unique opportunities presented by billions joining the global economy, rising middle classes, and strong alpha potential for active managers. 2025 Morningstar Investment Conference: Making Money in the Muni Markets

This panel, featuring Elizabeth Foos (Morningstar Research Services LLC), David Hammer (PIMCO), Curtis White (J.P.
