Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) is the top institutional equity holding, while tech giants Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) are second and third must owned institutional name in the third quarter of 2014, according to a report of the top institutional holdings from the research firm eVestment.

Institutional investors enter and exit stocks 12 to 24 months before retail investors do and are often in front of major investing trends, eVestment noted. The trend towards the importance of technology exposure is evident, as is a timely move away from energy related names.
