Alternative investments offer different sources of return to better manage risk, William Blair noted in a white paper titled Read and Learn Alternative Investing, as it answered 22 questions about the topic and investing in its Macro Allocation fund.
In a portfolio allocation, the report recommends funding from alternatives should come from the sector which it most logically matches. For instance, high growth hedge funds might be logically funded from the equity portion of a portfolio. Fixed income funds might be funded from the bond section of the portfolio, the white paper suggests.
