In early April 2024, I returned to China and visited Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong. The purpose of this memo is to reflect on what I saw whilst travelling around these thriving megacities and what I heard in many conversations with friends, fellow investors, businesspeople, and artists. I published a memo after returning from my first post-covid trip to China one year ago. I wrote then that I was sceptical before the trip about how much one person can learn from spending a few days in a country as vast as China. As it turned out, I was pleased…
- China is a Tricky Topic
- The Door is Opening
- Mega Cities are Thriving
- Companies are Thriving Too
- The Economy is in a Tough Spot
- A Depressed Economy is not a Defeated Economy
- Competition is Intensifying
- Companies are Going West
- Barriers are Lowering
- The Welcome is Getting Frostier
- Geopolitics is the Biggest Risk
- Pessimism Rules
- I am More Optimistic
